This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the Mall at Sears. Anchorage has changed a lot since then and the Mall is going through some big changes as well. As such, the property is being renamed to the Anchorage Midtown Mall.
When it opened, the Mall was Anchorage’s biggest indoor shopping area, with the state’s only Sears store on one end and a brand new Carrs grocery store on the other. There weren’t many roads south of Northern Lights Boulevard (what is now Benson was little more than a dirt road) and Sears was Anchorage’s ultimate one-stop shopping department store.
Now 50 years later, the Mall is located in the heart of Anchorage and a slate of vibrant new stores will be opening in the next year, including: REI, Carrs/Safeway, Guitar Center and Planet Fitness!
